The faces of Hospice. Each face tells a story.

Each face tells a story.

Every face is a member of the family to Hospice of Marion County. Some are patients, some are spouses, some are children, others are parents. Here are just two we cared for this year:

Lance GrayLance Gray was a gentleman and an officer, a patriot to the end. When he arrived at Legacy Hospice House in November, he wasn’t expected to live until Election Day. Once his symptoms were under control, Lance said, “I did a complete 360 after coming here!” He was feeling so well, he asked for a special favor: “I want to cast one last vote.” The team coordinated transportation and an escort for Lance to the local polling station where he was wheeled into the booth accompanied by applause from those who witnessed his brave gesture. He proudly brought back an I Voted sticker and a flag. Lance passed peacefully just a few days later, happy that he was able to cast one final last ballot for his country.

Shannon DeanShannon Dean left three children when she died last Spring at age 27. Advancing illness knows no age, no gender and no circumstances, but when it strikes a young mother, many lives are deeply affected forever. When Shannon was admitted to hospice, her pain had left her unable to care for her children, aged 18 months to 7 years old. Our staff provided round-the-clock care, managing Shannon’s symptoms and keeping her comfortable, in addition to guiding a smooth transition as her children began living with their grandmother.
